My Story
An average of 115 drownings occur in Ireland every year, and males represent about 4 out of 5 deaths. Despite what you may think about the dangers of the sea, the majority of all drownings occur at inland water sites. Drownings often happen quickly and silently. Alcohol is a factor in one third of these tragedies. You don't have to be swimmng either; drownings happen during boating trips, fishing outings, or simply when out walking near lakes and rivers.
The RNLI are determined to be there when they're needed most. Usually, RNLI lifesavers answer mayday calls and go to rescue others. But, this May, it's them who are asking for OUR help.
So I'm answering the call by taking part in the Mayday Mile to help make sure these brave lifesavers have the kit and training they need to save lives and keep families safe this summer.
I am going to swim my mile this May in our local canal. I will set off from Louisa Bridge at 6pm on Saturday, 21st May, in Leixlip, Co. Kildare, on the Royal Canal, and swim towards Cope Bridge at Confey. Please consider a donation, no matter how small. It all helps. And of course, it would be great to see some friendly faces on the day.
Many thanks,
Declan
