My Story

Here in Athlone we hear so many times of people losing their lives in the River Shannon, especially young people, and the risks the rescue teams take each time they are called.

I would like to do something to help so I am hosting a series of events in Athlone to raise money to provide training and kit for the RNLI volunteer crews and lifeguards who work tirelessly to keep people safe. As a 1988 RNLI poster says, featuring a male volunteer in full gear: "His services are free, his safety isn't." Back in 1988 a pair of boots cost £6 and protective trousers £49 so you can imagine how expensive the full gear is. Not only that, training costs money too, and so does the time the volunteers allocate to save lives at sea, in rivers and lakes.

Getting into danger by the water can happen so easily, to us and those we love. The RNLI are determined to be there when people need them the most. But they need our help.
